What's Happening Today
Wednesday, March 10
Pastoral Bible Study (Wednesday) Pastoral Bible Studies will be on Wednesday nights starting with prayer at 6:30 pm
Pastor Lynn Spicer and his wife Sis. Pam Spicer have 3 children, and 11 grandchildren. They have pastored here for 19 years and are very thankful for all of God's blessings that they have been allowed to be a part of.
Sis. Pam Spicer is the S.M.I.L.E. superintendent at Faith Temple U.P.C. In December of 1974 she was baptized in Jesus name. In February of 1975 she received the gift of the Holy Ghost. Sis. Pam Spicer was 16 years old. Within a year she was teaching the nursery class in the Alton Pentecostal Church, in Alton, Illinois. In 1977 she married Lynn Spicer and moved to Indiana. Sis. Pam Spicer became active in the Sunday School department at the Portage United Pentecostal church. Sunday School exploded there. To hold classes we were meeting at the church, the Boy Scout hut, the YMCA, an empty house that sat on the property the church had bought, even a funeral home. On one very special Sunday Sis. Pam Spicer remebered the Primary class that she taught in with several other people at the Y had over 100 children in it. The new church was built and for the first time she became a lead teacher of a class. It was not what she had wanted. In fact she was very upset about it. Sis. Pam Spicer had wanted to teach with her niece. Her niece had more experience and she would have loved to teach with her. But God has a way of seeing into our future and preparing us for it before we even suspect it.
In 1991 the Spicer family moved to Dubuque, Iowa to start a home mission work in the city. The first Sunday they were here their children ages 13, 10 and 2 were the only children for Sunday School. But her husband, Pastor Spicer, told her teach and prepare like it's for a great group of kids. They saw it grow. They outgrew the building they were renting and moved onto 10 acres of land and a building to grow in. In 2009 we had over 500 different children and young people come to Faith Temple UPC. This past year we saw 6 children baptized and several more receive the Holy Ghost.
11 of those children are her grandchildren. Our church has over 20 teachers, three of them are her children and her son-in-law works in the S.M.I.L.E. office. Sis. Pam Spicer has been involved in Sunday School (S.M.I.L.E.) for 35 years. Her parents didn't take her to church. She didn't really go to Sunday School as a child but for a short time with an older sister. But it is her passion.
Our Church doesn't have S.M.I.L.E. and teach the kids so that we can "get" the parents. At Faith Temple we teach the children because the children need Jesus in their life. In this world we live in it is their only real hope. Jeremiah 29:11 The Living Bible version says "For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord. They are plans for good and not evil, to give you a future and a hope." Her prayer is that God will continue to use her to help fulfill this in lives of the children she comes in contact with. That they too will have a good plan in their life, a future and a hope!
Bro. Anything has been at Faith Temple for 3 years now. He is a very friendly person who enjoys meeting all of the new people who come to Sunday S.M.I.L.E. Bro. Anything got his name because he will literally wear almost... well ANYTHING!
He was never taught what matches and what doesn't. Sometimes he wears big glasses, pool floaties, slippers, capes, etc. Every week he wears something different.
Bro. Anything is pictured here with the 2nd grade class. They love doing the wave.
Tanya Davis, Albino Conley, and Jim Ross are co-leaders of the Juniors ministry.
Tanya Davis is the happy mother to three wonderful children Jim, Ruby and Hannah. Tanya feels blessed to minister to young children and see them grow closer to Jesus.
She feels blessed to minister in the nursery on Sunday mornings. Even babies can understand that God loves them. She also has started teaching Bible Studies in the Jail and has seen 3 women receive the Holy Ghost during these studies.
Albino Conley has had a passion for children in the Juniors for several years. He has been a "dorm dad" at Junior camp for 4 years. He enjoys having fun and interacting with children as often as possible.
He helps on the bus ministry faithfully and is an essential member of our soundroom team and S.M.I.L.E. department.
Jim Ross is the son of Tanya Davis and the helpful brother to Ruby and Hannah. He loves getting on the children's level and helping guide them in a closer relationship with Jesus. His sense of fun and humor reaches the kids in a special way.
He enjoys ushering and being a role model for worshiping God.
He helps on the bus ministry and is willing to do anything to help out in the church.
Bro. Jeff Hessel was born in Dubuque, IA and came to church in 1978. He attended Loras College and majored in Psychology.
In the early 80's he recorded a gospel album with a group called Tabernacle.
Music and worship has always been a passion of his. God spoke to our pastor about using Bro. Jeff in this ministry
The vision for the music ministry is to continue to help promote a worship atmosphere in our services that attracts the presence of God and to witness to our community through music. Music is such a powerful force in our world. When we use it for God's glory (for which it was intended), God shows up in awesome ways.
Bro. Bruce and Sis. Faith are the proud parents of two girls, and a proud grandparents of a little girl.
Their passion for reaching out to our community began with youth and flourished from there. They organize and operate a growing bus ministry. Also each year they have a walk-a-thon. In 2009 over $4,000 was raised to help fund repairs and maintain our 2 buses, 2 minibuses and our one 15 passenger van.
Bro. Chuck and Sis. Katrina are the proud parents of four children.
They are excited to be a part of this new ministry. Anyone that is a senior in high school until the age of 30 is welcome to come. They have a lot of exciting and fun events scheduled for this year.

After graduating they decided to stay in Dubuque. It is a safe town but big enough for all that they need! Plus they found Jesus! And a great church!

As a wife and a mom her passion has always been toward the family. These are 2 "jobs" that she jumped into at a young age with no education! Her goal as Ladies Coordinator is to provide meetings and activities to show how to do women tasks. These include: cleaning, cooking, ironing, dressing like a godly women and more.
We meet the first Tuesday of every month. Please check out the Ladies Ministry page for more details on upcoming events!
Sis. Connie and Bro. Gery got married January 26, 1992. They moved to Dubuque in June of 2001 from Louisiana. They have four children: Alisha (23), Dustin (18), Shauna (17), and Nathan (14).
Bro. Gery has been in the Army for 20 years and is currently serving in Dubuque with the 389th Engineer Battalion.
Bro. Gery and Sis. Connie were approached by Pastor to pray about leading the ushers and hostess. They both felt a burden to be involved and felt this was a wonderful ministry to be involved with.
Their vision is to have our team to continue to grow and make an impact within our church, an instant impact on our visitors and to reach our community. Our passion for this ministry has grown each day. Watching everything that God has one with this ministry while using us has been a blessing.
