Pastor Lynn Spicer and his wife Sis. Pam Spicer have 3 children, 2 of which are married, and 10 grandchildren. They have pastored here for 17 years and are very thankful for all of God's blessings that they have been allowed to be a part of
Sis. Pam Spicer is the S.M.I.L.E. superintendent at Faith Temple U.P.C. In December of 1974 she was baptized in Jesus name. In February of 1975 she received the gift of the Holy Ghost. Sis. Pam Spicer was 16 years old. Within a year she was teaching the nursery class in the Alton Pentecostal Church, in Alton, Illinois. In 1977 she married Lynn Spicer and moved to Indiana. Sis. Pam Spicer became active in the Sunday School department at the Portage United Pentecostal church. Sunday School exploded there. To hold classes we were meeting at the church, the Boy Scout hut, the YMCA, an empty house that sat on the property the church had bought, even a funeral home. On one very special Sunday Sis. Pam Spicer remebered the Primary class that she taught in with several other people at the Y had over 100 children in it. The new church was built and for the first time she became a lead teacher of a class. It was not what she had wanted. In fact she was very upset about it. Sis. Pam Spicer had wanted to teach with her niece. Her niece had more experience and she would have loved to teach with her. But God has a way of seeing into our future and preparing us for it before we even suspect it.
In 1991 the Spicer family moved to Dubuque, Iowa to start a home mission work in the city. The first Sunday they were here our children ages 13, 10 and 2 were the only children for Sunday School. But her husband, Pastor Spicer, told her teach and prepare like it's for a great group of kids. They saw it grow. They outgrew the building they were renting and moved onto 10 acres of land and a building to grow in. This year 2008 we have already had over 300 different children and young people come to Faith Temple UPC.
Ten of those children are her grandchildren. Our church has over 20 teachers, three of them are her children and her son-in-law works in the S.M.I.L.E. office. Sis. Pam Spicer has been involved in Sunday School (S.M.I.L.E.) for 33 years. Her parents didn't take her to church. She didn't really go to Sunday School as a child but for a short time with an older sister. But it is her passion.
Our Church doesn't have S.M.I.L.E. and teach the kids so that we can "get" the parents. At Faith Temple we teach the children because the children need Jesus in their life. In this world we live in it is their only real hope. Jeremiah 29:11 The Living Bible version says "For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord. They are plans for good and not evil, to give you a future and a hope." Her prayer is that God will continue to use her to help fulfill this in lives of the children she comes in contact with. That they too will have a good plan in their life, a future and a hope!
Bro. Jeff Hessel was born in Dubuque, IA and came to church in 1978. He attended Loras College and majored in Psychology.
In the early 80's he recorded a gospel album with a group called Tabernacle.
Music and worship has always been a passion of his. God spoke to our pastor about using Bro. Jeff in this ministry
The vision for the music ministry is to continue to help promote a worship atmosphere in our services that attracts the presence of God and to witness to our community through music. Music is such a powerful force in our world. When we use it for God's glory (for which it was intended), God shows up in awesome ways.
Bro. Bruce and Sis. Faith are the proud parents of two girls, and a proud grandparents of a little girl.
Their passion for reaching out to our community began with youth and flourished from there. They organize and operate a growing bus ministry. Also each year they have a walk-a-thon. This year the walk-a-thon is Saturday, September 20th. The money raised will go to the Jesus Church that was destroyed in the flooding in Cedar Rapids.
Bro. Chuck and Sis. Katrina are the proud parents of four children.
They enjoy taking the children to parks and recently the Junior's did fundraisers that allowed all of them to go to the Madison Zoo free and they each received a free t-shirt.
Bro. John grew up in Kewanee, IL. John came to Dubuque in 1990 for college at the University of Dubuque. It was there that he met his wife, Kathie. They were married in 1994 and started a family. In 1995, when his son was 1 year old, Bro. John and Sis. Kathie committed their lives to serving Jesus with all of their heart, soul and mind. Over the past years John has served in their church in various ministries: Sunday SMILE teacher, Junior leader and Men's Leader. John has a burden to see men grow in God and with each other. Recently the men built model cars and the church donated money for the best cars in three categories. Over $200 was raised and the money went to sponsor a mission child. As a wife and a mom her passion has always been toward the family. These are 2 "jobs" that she jumped into at a young age with no education! Her goal as Ladies Coordinator is to provide meetings and activities to show how to do women tasks. These include: cleaning, cooking, ironing, dressing like a godly women and more.
We meet the first Tuesday of every month. Please check out the Ladies Ministry page for more details on upcoming events!
Sis. Connie and Bro. Gery got married January 26, 1992. They moved to Dubuque in June of 2001 from Louisiana. They have four children: Alisha (22), Dustin (16), Shauna (15), and Nathan (12).
Bro. Gery has been in the Army for 20 years and is currently serving in Dubuque with the 389th Engineer Battalion.
Bro. Gery and Sis. Connie were approached by Pastor to pray about leading the ushers and hostess. They both felt a burden to be involved and felt this was a wonderful ministry to be involved with.
Their vision is to have our team to continue to grow and make an impact within our church, a instant impact on our visitors and to reach our community. Our passion for this ministry has grown each day. Watching everything that God has with this ministry while using us has been a blessing.
